Working Hours: Working hours for this position consist of no more than a 25 hour work week, exclusive of a -- hour or 1 hour lunch. Working one or two evenings may be required. Specific work hours to be agreed upon by the supervisor and employee prior to the onset of employment. Summary: The Writing Center Specialist has responsibility for maintaining the Writing Studio and assisting in the Foundational Studies Lab which both provide writing and academic support to students. The Specialist will support academic success by working with students individually or in groups to improve academic knowledge and writing skills. The Specialist is also responsible for training new tutors, conducting workshops and recordkeeping. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following: Academic Support Responsibilities: Work cooperatively with staff to provide academic support for students. Provide individual and group tutoring assistance to students, including, but not limited to, study skills, college success strategies, and writing and reading support. Implement strategies for academic support in curriculum courses that require writing. Organize and distribute materials to support the writing curriculum. Collaborate with faculty and staff to develop tutorial support and programing that will promote successful outcomes for the students in curriculum courses. Plan, design, and conduct workshops and programming to provide additional support for curriculum courses for students. Assists the Tutoring Coordinator to disseminate information to staff, faculty and students about tutoring opportunities. Promote academic support services to faculty and students through classroom visits, participating in campus events, and through flyers, emails and other digital and print mediums. Support the Foundational Studies Lab, as requested, by providing tutoring, training or coordination of lab activities. Participate in tutoring program evaluations as well as student outcome assessment evaluations. Complete monthly Report detailing weekly responsibilities and services provided. Aiding students with computer software associated with designated coursework. These include but are not limited to Canvas, Microsoft Office Suite, My Writing Lab, My Reading Lab, etc.). Maintain appropriate ethical and professional conduct while working with students, staff and faculty. Approach and welcome students into the Center and initiate tutoring assistance. Ensure that all writing/reading tutors approach tutoring responsibilities in a similar manner. Assist with the creation and editing of the Tutoring Center monthly newsletter. Other duties as assigned, including staff development activities and meetings that relate to job duties Administrative Responsibilities: Assist in training and mentoring tutors on established policies and procedures and expectations. Assist the Tutoring Coordinator in the planning of tutor training sessions. Coordinate necessary reporting and data entry for tutor/student contacts. Coordinate with the Tutoring Coordinator, Foundational Studies Lab Coordinator and Director of Advising and Academic Services to recruit, screen, hire, train, orient, mentor and schedule tutors. Collect data relevant for reporting student use of tutoring and generate reports that will assist in the evaluation of student outcome assessment as well as reporting required information as requested. Supervisory Responsibilities This job has no supervisory responsibilities. Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education and/or Experience Required Bachelor's Degree in English, Education or related field required. Master's degree preferred. One year of teaching or tutoring writing and study skills in a secondary or post secondary environment is required. Preferred Demonstrated experience working with traditional and non-traditional college students and students with disabilities is preferred. Experience teaching rhetoric and composition at the college-level. Experience coordinating or managing a writing or tutoring center Experience utilizing online tutoring systems, Pearson Lab products and other online learning tools Bilingual applicants preferred. Other Skills and Abilities Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills required. Patience and the ability to work collaborate and work well in teams. Experience with college student population, non-traditional populations, and tutor program development preferred. Computer Skills To perform this job successfully, an individual should have experience with and knowledge of online tutoring services, Canvas LMS, Internet and Microsoft Office Products, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations None Communication Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of staff, clients, and the general public. Mathematical Skills Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to interpret basic statistical information. Reasoning Ability Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
