Description: Johnson & Johnson MedTech is recruiting for a Senior
Tooling Engineer at the Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Raynham, MA or
Westchester, PA facilities. Purpose: This individual will be part
of the Technical Operations group, supporting the Enabling
Technologies platform. This platform is responsible for robotics,
powered handpieces, and other hardware and software technologies
enabling our businesses in Joint Reconstruction, Spine, and Trauma.
The candidate will be responsible for the design, development, and
optimization of tooling and manufacturing processes to support
efficient production and product quality. You will be responsible
for: Design of Tooling: Conceptualization: The candidate will
conceptualize tooling designs based on specific product
requirements and production methods. This includes understanding
the geometry and functionality of devices and their components to
create effective tooling solutions. Detailed Design: Use CAD
software to create detailed blueprints for various tooling
components (e.g., molds, jigs, fixtures, and dies). The designs
should include tolerances, materials specifications, and assembly
procedures. Material Selection: Identify and select appropriate
materials for tooling to ensure durability, cost-effectiveness, and
compatibility with production processes. 2. Development of Tooling:
Prototyping: Coordinate the prototyping of tooling designs to
validate their functionality. This involves collaborating with
machine shops or in-house manufacturing teams to build initial
tools. Collaboration with Manufacturers: Engage with external
vendors or internal manufacturing teams to ensure that tooling can
be effectively produced at scale. Conduct feasibility studies to
understand any technical constraints in the production of tooling.
Testing and Validation: Perform thorough testing on newly developed
tools to ensure they meet required specifications and function
properly in real production environments. Capture data on
performance and iterate the design if needed. 3. Optimization of
Manufacturing Processes: Process Analysis: The engineer will
analyze existing manufacturing processes and tooling performance,
identifying inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and areas for improvement.
This might involve direct observation on the production floor, data
analysis, and gathering team feedback. Tooling Improvements:
Implement modifications to tooling designs and processes aimed at
enhancing productivity, reducing cycle times, and minimizing waste.
This may also involve the integration of automation or other
advanced manufacturing techniques. Standardization: Develop
standardized practices and guidelines for tooling and manufacturing
processes to ensure consistency and reliability in production
output. 4. Support for Efficient Production: Production
Coordination: Maintain regular communication with production teams
to understand their tooling needs, identify problems, and support
them with effective solutions. Ensure that tools are designed for
easy setup and changeover to minimize downtime. Performance
Monitoring: Set up monitoring systems to track the performance of
tooling in production, analyzing data to ensure tools operate
within their intended efficiency ranges. Training and Support:
Provide ongoing training to production staff regarding the
effective use and solving of tools. Support them in resolving any
issues that arise in the production process. 5. Quality Assurance:
Quality Control Standards: Develop tooling that adheres to quality
control standards and ensure that it meets all relevant safety and
regulatory requirements. Feedback and Iteration: Gather feedback
from quality assurance teams about tooling performance and product
quality, using this information to drive continuous improvement in
designs and processes. Documentation: Ensure comprehensive
documentation of tooling designs, specifications, and optimization
efforts to facilitate knowledge sharing and future improvements .
Education: BS in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent) required
Experience and Skills: Required: Minimum of 5 years of experience
in tooling design and engineering, preferably in a manufacturing
environment. Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks,
AutoCAD) for design purposes. Strong understanding of material
properties and manufacturing processes (e.g., injection molding,
machining, stamping). Familiarity with quality assurance principles
and inspection techniques. Excellent analytical and problem-solving
skills. Strong communication and collaboration abilities. Ability
to manage numerous projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced
environment. Preferred: Certification in Tooling Engineering or a
related technical certification Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma
certification Other: Up to 10% travel, domestic and international
