Job Description:

PURPOSE OF YOUR POSITION Assigns ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) procedure and service level codes to Evangelical Medical Services Organization patient encounters. Reviews medical record documentation to ensure appropriate coding and billing of physician and non-physician patient services. GENERAL INFORMATION Must possess knowledge of ICD-10-CM and Current Procedural Terminology in addition to medical terminology and anatomy/physiology. Must have assertive communication skills and the ability to deal with others using tact and diplomacy. Computer skills and ability to utilize Microsoft Excel and Word are also required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work is generally light and frequently requires prolonged sitting (more than 80% of work time). Work may require occasional lifting of files and other materials up to 15 lbs (6-20% of work time). Visual acuity required to read written and printed materials. Manual dexterity required to use various office equipment. ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Generally good working conditions with some discomfort due to noise, crowded conditions and frequent interruptions (more than 80% of work time). Universal Precautions may apply. QUALIFICATIONS Successful completion of a two-year Medical Secretarial or Health Information Technology program. CPC (Certified Professional Coding) certification through the AAPC, AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist, AHIMA Registered Health Information Technician or Registered Health Information Administrator certification required within six months of employment. Pennsylvania state police criminal record check, child abuse history clearance and an FBI criminal history check required. Work requires intermediate to advanced computer literacy skills to be able to operate in several applications at once and manipulate files. Knowledge of data abstracting software preferred. Must have intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and email. Must be able to utilize electronic calendar to schedule meetings. Work requires advanced interpersonal skills to exchange information between team members, physicians and other clinical staff and tactfully discuss quality issues (21-50% of work time). Work requires analytical ability to resolve human, legal, financial or administrative problems. Must be able to analyze medical records and coding guidelines, extract data, identify areas for quality improvement and verify compliance with all regulations. Independent judgment is frequently required (21-50% of work time). Work requires a high level of mental and visual focus requiring concentration and attention to detail. Work is very frequently performed under tight deadlines (51-80% of work time).
